What is this thing called love? What color is it and what shape? Is it sweet or savory? Is it big or small? Like a lot of kids, Emma would really like to know. The problem is: everyone Emma asks--Mom, Dad, Grandma, and Grandad--seems to have a different idea of what love is. Can love really be in a piece of cake or a game of football? It seems there's a lot more to this love thing than Emma ever imagined! In this entertaining and ultimately touching tale of questions and answers, Davide Cali and Anna Laura Cantone remind us that, for a child, the most important love is that which lies at the heart of your own family.

The Legalization of Human Rights - Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Human Rights and Human Rights Law (Paperback, New Ed):... The Legalization of Human Rights - Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Human Rights and Human Rights Law (Paperback, New Ed)
Saladin Meckled-Garcia, Basak Cali
R1,379 Discovery Miles 13 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The past few decades have witnessed an increase in the number international human rights treaties, their incorporation into domestic jurisdictions as well as the proliferation of wider public discourse on human rights. 'Human rights' has taken centre stage as an international political goal, however much of this talk is actually about human rights law.
This book starts from a new and provocative premise: that the relationship between human rights and their legal expression is not a straightforward one, but needs to be examined more closely. The volume, therefore, scrutinises the extent to which legalisation shapes the human rights ideal, and surveys its ethical, political and practical repercussions. The expert contributors to the volume approach these issues from a variety of different perspectives: political theory/moral theory, anthropology, sociology, international law, international politics and political science and demonstrate a diversity of methodologies.
This book invites students and researchers of human rights to question the gap between human rights as a moral and political concept, and human rights law, provoking the reader to consider the possibilities of deliberation on human rights outside of their legal manifestations.

Sehrengiz, Urban Rituals and Deviant Sufi Mysticism in Ottoman Istanbul (Paperback): B. Deniz Calis-kural Sehrengiz, Urban Rituals and Deviant Sufi Mysticism in Ottoman Istanbul (Paperback)
B. Deniz Calis-kural
R1,474 Discovery Miles 14 740 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Sehrengiz is an Ottoman genre of poetry written in honor of various cities and provincial towns of the Ottoman Empire from the early sixteenth century to the early eighteenth century. This book examines the urban culture of Ottoman Istanbul through Sehrengiz, as the Ottoman space culture and traditions have been shaped by a constant struggle between conflicting groups practicing political and religious attitudes at odds. By examining real and imaginary gardens, landscapes and urban spaces and associated ritualized traditions, the book questions the formation of Ottoman space culture in relation to practices of orthodox and heterodox Islamic practices and imperial politics. The study proposes that Azehrengiz was a subtext for secret rituals, performed in city spaces, carrying dissident ideals of Melami mysticism; following after the ideals of the thirteenth century Sufi philosopher Ibn al-'Arabi who proposed a theory of 'creative imagination' and a three-tiered definition of space, the ideal, the real and the intermediary (barzakh). In these rituals, marginal groups of guilds emphasized the autonomy of individual self, and suggested a novel proposition that the city shall become an intermediary space for reconciling the orthodox and heterodox worlds. In the early eighteenth century, liminal expressions of these marginal groups gave rise to new urban rituals, this time adopted by the Ottoman court society and by affluent city dwellers and expressed in the poetry of NedA (R)m. The author traces how a tradition that had its roots in the early sixteenth century as a marginal protest movement evolved until the early eighteenth century as a movement of urban space reform.

Why Leaders Fight (Hardcover): Michael C. Horowitz, Allan C. Stam, Cali M. Ellis Why Leaders Fight (Hardcover)
Michael C. Horowitz, Allan C. Stam, Cali M. Ellis
R2,245 Discovery Miles 22 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The history of political events is made by people. From wars to elections to political protests, the choices we make, our actions, how we behave, dictate events. Not all individuals have the same impact on our world and our lives. Some peoples' choices alter the pathways that history takes. In particular, national chief executives play a large role in forging the destinies of the countries they lead. Why Leaders Fight is about those world leaders and how their beliefs, world views, and tolerance for risk and military conflict are shaped by their life experiences before they enter office - military, family, occupation, and more. Using in-depth research on important leaders and the largest set of data on leader backgrounds ever gathered, the authors of Why Leaders Fight show that - within the constraints of domestic political institutions and the international system - who ends up in office plays a critical role in determining when and why countries go to war.
